I agree, insomnia can be the worse. If you can't sleep you can't hardly do anything. .Valarian is an herb which is considered safe, but it may take a couple weeks to work. Estrogen can work by decreasing hot flashes which often can disturb sleep. Often our minds are tired but our bodies are not so regular exercise is important for good sleep. Just don't exercise right before bedtime. Yoga, meditation and prayer have all been used with good effect to quiet a busy mind for better sleep. Long term insomnia should be investigated by a health professional to rule out things like thyroid disorder as a cause. Also an evaluation in a sleep disorder clinic may be warranted. See your health care provider for a referral.

I am SOOOO in need of a good treatment for insomnia, my biggest peri-menopausal issue. I have tried ambien, lunesta, melatonin, with no significant relief. I have eliminated cafffiene all day, have no psych issues that would contribute, like depression or ADD. I jsut need to be able to sleep past 3 am. Any suggestions?
